Features

Hewlett-Packard's Photosmart Premium is a handsome, nicely constructed photo-centric all-in-one (AIO) printer that's designed and marketed for family use. It’s easy to use and capable of producing very good photos and text.

The body of the unit is shiny, eggshell white, with gently rounded corners. The HP Photosmart Premium’s automatic duplexer protrudes out the back just enough to allow the unit's cords and cables to be tucked away, letting you position the printer against a wall or backdrop. Everything is instantly accessible, including the inks and dual over-and-under paper trays. The white-on-white buttons on the angled control panel are well-marked and logically arranged.

The HP Photosmart Premium Fax features dedicated buttons for Redeye Removal and Photo Reprints on an angled control panel.

The Photosmart Premium uses a five-ink delivery system (cyan, magenta, yellow, photo black, text black), which eliminates the need to swap black cartridges when switching from photo to text printing. Ink cartridges come in normal and XL sizes. The XL cartridges work out to approximately 2.2 cents per page of text, and 9.4 cents for color, about average for an AIO. Besides being Energy Star-rated, the Photosmart Premium further helps the environment through its abilities to print on both sides of a page or to print multiple pages on a single sheet.

The Photosmart Premium supports CompactFlash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Secure Digital/MultimediaCard, Secure Digital High Capacity Card, and xD-Picture Card.

Setup and installation are simple and trouble-free, The only assembly required is attaching the automatic document feeder tray—it’s good for up to 50 sheets—and inserting the ink cartridges. Users can connect via wires (USB or Ethernet, and RJ-11 for the fax) or wirelessly (Wi-Fi ), as well as print directly from (as well as save to) memory cards or a PictBridge-enabled digital camera.

Paper handling could Up to 125 sheets of plain paper fit in the adjustable main tray, as well as 50 sheets of 4x6- or 5x7-inch photo paper in the photo tray. While the receiver tray can accommodate up to 50 sheets.

HP’s interface is easy to use. If you’re using HP papers, the Photosmart Premium will automatically detect and select the proper settings for the type and grade.
